Over the long but incredibly fabulous weekend, I went to visit an old client of mine. Her home is so incredibly beautiful and glamorous. Every last detail. She had been having some hang ups in life, and was asking for my opinions and advice. I suggested we do a little Decor Therapy to her home, so we went around to see what was feeling "off".
The first place she took me to was her closet and Lord it was a mess! In my upcoming book "Decor Therapy", I talk about how your closet is directly related to your current state of confidence. When you closet is a disaster, its highly likely that your self-esteem and state of mind is a bit chaotic too.
Here are a few ways to resolve this issue:
1. Stop the comparison game. When you look at celebrity closets or the closets of your best girlfriends who seem to "have it all", you can get the idea in your head that you need to have a closet full of clothes, shoes filling up the shelves and accessories like they have at a boutique. THIS IS SO NOT NECESSARY! It's important that you don't look to the left or the right and simply look at your own closet. What is the current state of your closet & what is it saying about you?
2. Get savvy about your inventory. I like to have my clients get on a closet diet. Take a few solid hours going over everything in your closet. If it doesn't make you look and feel absolutely fabulous currently...get rid of it! When we hold on to something for the idea that "one day" we will look great in it again, we are holding on to the idea that you are not okay right now as you are. Hello, confidence killer!!!! Unless you are pregnant, chances are your body isn't changing too much anytime this season. So, just let go of what doesn't work for you. Even if you fit in to those fabulous pants again one day, they may be totally out of style and you may want a new pair anyway.
3. Make a box for memories. My client had a shirt that she wore when she traveled to Thailand many moons ago and the thought of getting rid of it just totally kills her spirit. So, I suggested to allow herself a box (not too big, opt for something pretty to look at) to keep all the clothes and accessory that she will probably never wear but doesn't want to lose. This is all you need, you don't need to hold on to anything that does not serve who you are right now.
4. Clear out the clutter. Don't just have stuff to have stuff. A lot of people struggle with the issue of keeping a plethora of material things around for comfort. Let it all go. I can remember when Kanye revamped Kim's wardrobe and left her with nothing. . .she then became a style icon. Wearing only things that looked absolutely fabulous on her. This is where confidence comes into play, you have to edit your wardrobe down to the things that make you feel your best. If you keep around that baggy old pair of jeans you love because they are easy and comfortable, you may find yourself in them more often than not. You are making it easy to be lazy. . .which breeds lack of confidence. See what I am getting at here?
"You have got to make room in your life to be your most fabulous self"
Once your closet is empty, now is the time to start curating it with your most favorite things.
Make sure your clothes are stored properly and cared for.
Choose beautiful matching hangers that keep your clothes looking good.
Fold sweaters and jeans and stack them in color coordinating piles.
Place a beautiful mirror in your closet that makes you look good.
Display your favorite things on a special shelf, to remind yourself of your most fabulous feeling.
One girl I know loves to hang her jewelry on a bulletin board to keep in untangled. I love the idea of adding beautiful & inspiring photos of what your dream look is. Vision boards are so helpful around the home to inspire you to keep your vision in life with your dream life. This will totally help your confidence and make jewelry easy to find.
At the end of the day, it's about keeping your closet neat and organized and filled with ONLY the things that make you feel your best.
