FLOOR SWAGGER

So the other day I was walking into yet another apartment building on my quest for the perfect apartment in this city. It's very difficult in new york, you know. Anyway, I walked in an the marble on the walls and floors was just to die for. It really got me thinking how not too many people pay attention to the floors, its the most overlooked aspect of a building, let alone the home. Then of course I was checking out some kelly wearstler design and of course, she always nails it...
The marble sunburst art deco style floor paired with marble walls and ridiculous furnishings...oh my goodness. It's just too good for words. I think if I were able to redesign a home for myself, I would get a little crazy with the walls. Bathrooms and entryways are the best places to get a little wild.
This is probably my favorite. Black. white. pink. marble. Hello!

Fashion meets decor: Balmain black and white checkers

Beautiful black + white checkered Balmian resort collection
meet
beautiful black + white checkered entryway flooring...
your bold, dramatic and oh so chic look just captivates my heart!

Lately everywhere I look, I see black and white checkers. Yesterday, I went to a client meeting and walking into the vestibule I stumbled up the most gorgeous black and white checkered floor. Right then  it hit me, this look is so hot right now! Not only am I seeing it everywhere in decor, but on the runways too. I can't wait to see what turns up in these next few weeks as Fashion Week approaches.
It's not as if the look is new, I think my grandparents have had floors like this in their kitchen for over 30 years. It really shows how everything old, will once become new again. I love this look so much right now...seriously hoping for some black and white checkers in my new building, wherever that might be. Anyone lucky enough to have this look in their home now???

Dear Decorista, {staining your floors black}

Wondering if you can help?!  We have an old timber cottage in the mountains. We are nearly finished renovating but have come to a halt with the timber floor.
Through the house we now have old stained floors, new timber floors. We have been advised that the easiest and most economical option is to paint the floors throughout. We think we will give this a go but we are a bit nervous. At this point the house is looking really good. We have managed to renovate but still retain the feel of a small rustic cottage and we don’t want to ruin the effect with a floor disaster. We want to go dark with the floor and if painting is a viable option we are thinking of painting the floor black but not sure this will look any good and not sure whether it should be matte or gloss or satin and so on.
Can you provide us with some inspiration?
Thanks...Sydney

Hi Sydney!
I personally LOVE stained black floors, I think they look absolutely gorgeous. I prefer a beautiful satin as opposed to a high gloss wet finish, but its all about personal preference. Also, black floors are hard to keep ultra clean, but if you want your home to be a stunner, go for it! See these beautiful examples, hope they entice you to go dark!!!
i love this gorgeous white kitchen with black floors...a KILLER combo.
So...here we have a super glossy black floor...
and this is a matte black stained floor. Very rustic looking.
and finally my most favorite look....satin finish.

bliss in the kitch' ...breathtaking breakfast nooks

How adorable are these beautiful breakfast nooks? Sunday mornings are the perfect opportunity to luxuriate and actually get use out of lounging in the breakfast nook. The tantalizing scent of freshly made coffee and beautiful bright sunlight seals the deal on my breakfast nook bliss.
